Gallery Exhibition: Selections From The Studio Museum in Harlem's Bearden Project

When:
Friday, September 19, 2014 9:00 AM - 10:00 PM
Where:
Joann Cole Mitte The University Galleries 1 & 2
Description:

On loan from the Studio Museum in Harlem, Selections from The Bearden Project presents works that were created for an exhibition honoring the centennial of Romare Bearden’s birth. The exhibition brings together works by contemporary artists who have each been influenced by this 20th-century master. Bearden, who was deeply involved with the founding of The Studio Museum in Harlem, was, for many of the artists whose works are featured, one of the first black artists they ever encountered. Working in a wide range of media, the artists mined a varied range of ideas and themes associated with Bearden’s career, including Modernism, urbanism, jazz, and the medium of collage.
