Students' Culture and Language | Two Documentaries

When:
Tuesday, October 13, 2015 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Where:
Academic Services Building Room 150
Description:

This Quetzal Critical Movie Series will show two short films highlighting the individual stories of students in the U.S. and South Africa who have fought against policies that dismiss their culture and language rights. The documentary Soweto Streets highlights the historic language riots from 1976 in which over 500 students died protesting against apartheid language policies. Precious Knowledge uncovers the portraits of several student activists who fought to keep a Mexican American Ethnic Studies program in Tucson, Arizona. Both films provide opportunities for Texas State students to question our educational systems and language/cultural policies while learning about the individuals who have changed history.
