Japanese Cinema Club presents Kaneto Shindo's Onibaba. The dark and disorienting existential thriller is set in war-torn medieval Japan and follows the macabre exploits of two peasant woman trapped in primal stasis. Their dynamic is used as a metaphor to contrast the new Japanese generation against the traditional society of their elders. Central themes include isolation, survival, jealousy, desperation, the reality of war, and the clashes of generations. This screening is the tenth of a series of Japanese new wave films being shown in an attempt to connect the Texas State audience with the art, history, and development of modern Japanese society.
